(dollar ($)) доллар, американский доллар, доллар США Денежная единица США, равна 100 центам. От названия европейского талера, который в свою очередь происходит от слова THAL (= долина), поскольку монеты этого вида впервые появились в долине Св. Иоахима в Богемии в 1519. Основной денежной единицей стал после принятия закона о чеканке монет Coinage Act 1792 года. Но еще до этого в 1775 был выпущен бумажный доллар. На современном банковском билете достоинством в один доллар изображен портрет Дж. Вашингтона Washington, George, а также обе стороны государственной печати США Great Seal of the United States на лицевой стороне и надпись "На Бога уповаем" In God we Trust на оборотной стороне. "(gulden) of Joachimstal," coin minted 16c. from silver from mine near Joachimstal, town in Erzgebirge Mountains in northwest Bohemia. Eng. colonists in Amer. used the word for Spanish pieces of eight. Continental Congress 1785 adopted dollar when it set up U.S. currency, on suggestion of Governeur Morris and Thomas Jefferson, because the term was widely known but not British.
